Health insurance is about to get a lot more expensive — again.
According to a new analysis by the nonpartisan KFF, Americans who purchase their health insurance through Healthcare.gov or state-run ACA marketplaces will see an average 75% increase in premiums next year. The reason? The expiration of enhanced federal subsidies that were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
📈 A Premium Hike That Hits Millions
During the pandemic, expanded tax credits made ACA health plans more affordable — some people paid as little as $60 per month. Now, those same individuals could see their premiums jump to $105/month or more, pricing many out of the system altogether. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 8.2 million people could lose coverage over the next decade due to these changes.
"People who are healthy are most likely to opt out when premiums spike," says Cynthia Cox, director of the ACA Program at KFF. "And that leaves insurers covering a sicker population, which drives costs even higher."
🛑 Traditional Insurance Is Failing Millions
With inflation, medical costs, and reduced subsidies, the traditional model of employer-based or ACA insurance is becoming increasingly unsustainable — especially for:
-
Freelancers and gig workers
-
Early retirees
-
Small business owners
-
Young adults
-
Families without employer-sponsored plans
People are stuck choosing between overpriced insurance or going without and risking financial ruin from a medical emergency.
